Warm & Personal Tone
John Smith, 78, of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Brooklyn, John was a lifelong New Yorker whose life reflected the values of hard work, loyalty, kindness and devotion to family. He grew up in a close-knit neighborhood where neighbors looked out for one another, children played on the sidewalks until the streetlights came on, and family gatherings were the center of life. Those early years shaped the man he would become: steady, generous, dependable and always willing to lend a hand. John attended local schools in Brooklyn and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. He later went on to build a long and respected career as a maintenance supervisor, a role that suited both his practical nature and his gift for solving problems. John was the kind of person who could fix almost anything, and he took quiet pride in a job done well. After many years of dedicated service, John retired, but he never truly slowed down. He remained active in his community, in his family's lives and in the daily routines he loved. He enjoyed taking long walks through his neighborhood, reading the newspaper each morning, watching baseball, working with his hands and spending time with the people who mattered most to him. He had a deep appreciation for simple pleasures: a good cup of coffee, a home-cooked meal, a conversation on the front steps, a Sunday drive and a table full of family. John will be remembered for his quiet strength and gentle humor. He was not a man who needed to be the center of attention, but his presence was always felt. He listened more than he spoke, gave advice when asked, and had a way of making people feel safe and cared for. Family was the great joy of John's life. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Margaret, whom he married in 1971. Together they built a life filled with love, patience and shared memories. John was a proud father to his children, Michael Smith, Robert Smith and Susan Smith, and a cherished grandfather to Emily, Daniel, Matthew, Olivia and Thomas. John is also survived by his brother, Anthony Smith, his sister, Carol Romano, and many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Rose Smith, and by his brother, Peter Smith. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Brooklyn Family Funeral Home, 245 86th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11209. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 230 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205. Burial will follow at Green-Wood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John's memory to a charity of your choice. "He lived with humility, loved his family completely and left us with memories we will carry forever."
